I searched immigrationportal.com and only found few than three cases in the last three months about H1B denial. The number does not seem to be unusually high to me.

macaca, This is really good point
There could be 3 reasons , which i could think of
1. The CIR, which was providing amnesty to aroun 12 million illegal residents in the US,so they wanted to keep the legal residents happy.
2.The DOS wanted to force USCIS to finish its backlog, if the dates were current and USCIS would have to accept our applications then they would have to process a lot of EAD/AP and would required a lot of work, They could put the 485 in queue but not AP/EAD. So the only way for USCIS was to process the backlog(At least many legal residents got GCS)
3.USCIS wanted to avoid accepting these applications till July 30, to get more fees( I think this is the least possible reason)

My employer is also behaving exactly similar way... Spend the money from your own Pocket ( 350 med + 385 ) around $750 and ask them to just
give the Future Employment Verification Letter for 485.
I'm finishing up all forms and other activities Like Medical , Birth Certificate etc..
After that pounce on your employer for Letter + the fees for 485 + fees for your own attorney fees ... If they disagrees come to a deal with just for the Letter... You are all set then !!
If they still dont agree i'll tell them that you are resigning and immigrating to Canada (Tell them that your Canadian PR is almost approved and you have a distant relative there)

Like many many people have said before - the GC is not the end of the road. it is just a milestone. Life goes on, irrespective.
Try playing this game:

What if, what if, what if....You will find that it is really not as bad as you think it is. The alternative solution may be much better, and make you much happier.

Have a good back-up plan (or two!). Participate in activities that interest you. make a difference in others lives - educate a few children. Take care of an elderly person. Leave a legacy behind.
And have a good life! Stop worrying! Happiness will follow.

Talk about your scare of getting too many people with substandard MS degrees. Do you not realize that the companies in USA knows a different in good US school and Bad one - So in nutshell the people from bad school wont get job? Do you know that there is nature's rule - Fittest Survival... So in case you are fit enough and qualified enough to get a job then you will get one, it does not matter if you are from good or bad school....

(and so do you)....So there you go....No wonder they pick up phone and dial....In any case, what better can they do?
We cannot reject numbersusa and other organizartion's ideas. As our people are suffering in retrogession some of their people and their families are impacted because of job loss in past. So we cannot tell that they do not have crediblity. They have some valid points also though some of them are absurd. But we need to understand them and try to elimimate their fears also.
